PRACTICES IN EMBODIED TEACHING
taught by Amy Matthews

at The Breathing Project, New York, NY
January - June 2017

How can you deepen your practice of teaching?

Can studying the complex wonder of the body's systems help you find different ways to hold space, transmit information, and be present to your students and clients?

These weekends are opportunities to deeply explore anatomy, kinesiology, physiology and embryology. In these workshops we explore the question of what it is to transmit information with skill, and how to treat teaching as an embodiment practice. Students are challenged to use the information that is explored in the weekends in developing principles of skillful teaching and to then put those principles into practice.

Within each weekend there are lectures on particular topics, asana practice and analysis, opportunities for structured explorations, teaching practice and feedback. These weekends can be taken individually, and in any order.

These weekends are open to people who are interested in expanding their understanding of anatomy, kinesiology and physiology, and who want to develop their teaching skills in the context of embodiment. Pre-requisites are previous training in anatomy and kinesiology and at least one year's teaching experience. Class size is limited to 15 students.

From the moment we arrive at our birth, we are learning to move - our experiences, body sensations, reflexes and integrative processes are continually creating patterns that help us find safety, comfort and curiosity.

This series of workshops will explore some of our earliest learning times, in the context of our adult bodies: the developmental process of moving from birth to walking.

Each of the four workshops focuses on the movement patterns that typically develop in a particular period of our first year: 0-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12 months.

SUMMER IMMERSION 2017
Starting From the Contents: Embodying Our Organs
taught by Amy Matthews

at The Breathing Project, New York, NY
July 17 - 21, 2017

The contents of our body - our organs - are essential for comfort, nourishment and growth.

When we embody our organs, we explore questions of survival, desire and choice.

When we move from our organs, we find volume and fluid movement.

In this weeklong immersion, we will explore the anatomy, embryology and embodiment of our organs through a combination of lecture, discussion and movement. We will consider the characteristics and qualities of our organs as a whole as well as dive into individual organs and organ systems.

Topics will include:

  • Digestive System: how we ingest and then digest, absorb and assimilate what is nourishing - and eliminate what we can't use.
  • Lungs & Heart: how these organs and their blood vessels circulate fluid and movement through the tissues of the body.
  • Kidneys & Bladder: how we maintain a fluid balance of resources in our body and in our movement.
  • Gonads: how embodying our ovaries and testes - from their primordial, undifferentiated origins to their present manifestation - informs our experience as humans and supports a sense of possibility and expression.

  • Dates & Times:
    Monday - Friday, 9:30 am - 5 pm
    Location:
The Breathing Project, 15 W. 26 St, 10th fl, NYC (at Broadway)
    Cost:
$950 if paid in full by June 1, 2017/$1200 after
